Burr Grinder
A burr grinder is a coffee grinder that crushes beans between two abrasive surfaces called burrs. One burr is stationary while the other rotates, and the gap between them determines the grind size. Beans are fed between the burrs and progressively broken down into particles of relatively uniform size as they pass through the grinding chamber.
The key advantage of burr grinders over blade grinders is consistency. Because all coffee particles must pass through the same gap, the resulting grind is far more uniform in size. Uniform particle size is critical for even extraction — if a grind contains both large and small particles, the small ones over-extract while the large ones under-extract, producing a muddled cup with competing sour and bitter flavors.
Burr grinders come in two main varieties: conical and flat. Conical burr grinders use a cone-shaped inner burr nested inside a ring-shaped outer burr, while flat burr grinders use two parallel disc-shaped burrs facing each other. Each design has distinct characteristics in terms of grind distribution, heat generation, and flavor profile that appeal to different users.
Quality varies enormously across the burr grinder market. Entry-level electric burr grinders are affordable and produce adequate grinds for drip and French press. Espresso requires a finer, more precise grind that demands a higher-quality grinder — expect to invest significantly more for acceptable espresso results, with performance improving further at higher price points. Hand-powered burr grinders can deliver excellent grind quality at lower prices because they eliminate the motor cost, making them popular with budget-conscious coffee enthusiasts.
